This is the checklist a licensed engineer actually runs through, room by room, before calling a building safe to re-occupy — and where to look if it isn't.

Before anything else: if you see downed power lines near the building, a visibly leaning wall, a sagging or partially collapsed roofline, or standing water that may be in contact with wiring, do not enter. Wait for utility crews or a professional assessment. Everything below assumes the building looks structurally intact from the outside.

Step 1 — Exterior & Safety Check (Do This First, From Outside)

  • No downed power lines touching the building, fence, or standing water near it
  • No gas smell near meters or LPG tank connections
  • No visible structural collapse, leaning walls, or roof that's shifted from its original line
  • Ground around the foundation isn't actively eroding or undermined

  • Roof trusses and purlins show no new sag, splitting, or connection failure at the joints

  • Any crack wider than 5mm, or one you can see has grown compared to before the storm

  • No visible lean in columns or walls — check with a level or plumb line if unsure
  • Retaining walls or slope-side walls show no new bulging or displacement — these take the brunt of saturated-soil lateral pressure after heavy rain

  • Doors and windows still open, close, and latch flush — new sticking or a new visible gap suggests the frame has shifted
  • Ceilings and walls checked for discoloration, damp patches, or peeling paint from roof leaks
  • Floor tiles or wood flooring not lifted, warped, or hollow-sounding when tapped
  • No musty odor in enclosed spaces — an early sign of trapped moisture and incoming mold
  • Any floor that feels newly springy or beams that flex noticeably underfoot

  • Water pooling against the foundation instead of draining away — check 24–48 hours after rain stops, not immediately
  • Site drainage channels, canals, or catch basins are clear of debris and not backing up

  • No new erosion channels cutting toward the foundation from higher ground nearby
