An accessible cubicle is at least 1,800mm × 1,800mm clear, so a wheelchair can enter, close an outward-swinging 900mm door, and complete a full 1,800mm turning circle. Inside: a 450mm-high water closet set 450mm off the side wall, an L-type grab bar plus a flip-up bar rated for 200kg, and a roll-under lavatory at 800mm with 650mm of knee clearance. A bidet or spray hose is required, and signage must be tactile and mounted no higher than 1,500mm.

Every dimension in the accessible cubicle traces back to one requirement: a wheelchair user must be able to enter, close the door, transfer onto the water closet, and get back out — unaided. The 2024 Revised IRR, published in the Official Gazette on July 8, 2024, is the currently governing standard, and it sizes the room around that sequence of movements rather than around the fixtures.
The 1,800mm × 1,800mm clear area is not arbitrary. It is the diameter of the turning circle a standard wheelchair needs to rotate 360° — the manoeuvre required to face the door after transferring off the toilet. Shrink either dimension and the user can get in but cannot turn to leave. This is why a cubicle that measures 1,800mm on the plan but loses 100mm to a tiled-out wall, or to an inward-swinging door, fails: the clear circle is gone even though the rough opening looked right.

Is a 1,700mm × 1,700mm cubicle acceptable?
No. Older references circulated a 1,700mm figure, but the 2024 Revised IRR sets the accessible cubicle at 1,800mm × 1,800mm clear — that is the turning-circle diameter, so 1,700mm leaves a wheelchair user unable to rotate to face the door. Design and inspect to 1,800mm clear, after finishes.
Can the accessible toilet door swing inward if the room is large?
No. BP344 requires the door to swing outward regardless of room size. The reason is rescue: if a user falls against an inward-opening door, no one can get in. Outward swing is a safety requirement, not a space-saving one.
Does a unisex accessible toilet satisfy BP344?
Yes. A single unisex accessible cubicle meeting all the dimensions above is an accepted solution, and is often the most practical for smaller establishments — it avoids duplicating an accessible room in both the men's and women's facilities.
What height should the grab bars be?
Under the 2024 IRR, grab bars sit roughly 300mm above the water closet seat, with the L-type bar on the side wall (horizontal leg extending about 300mm past the bowl front, 750mm vertical leg) and a flip-up bar on the transfer side. Critically, both must be anchored to blocking that carries at least 200kg — a bar fixed only into hollow block will fail a pull test.
Do existing buildings have to comply?
Yes. Retrofits and renovations of existing public buildings must meet the current standard; only the routing and finishes are flexible. If your building predates an accessible toilet, adding one that meets these dimensions is required when you renovate the sanitary facilities.
