Every dimension above is anchored to the same logic: a seated user's reach envelope. Change the seat or fixture height and every other measurement in the room shifts with it — which is why the grab bar spec is written as an offset from the seat, not a fixed floor dimension.

Why Grab Bar Height Is the Failure Point It Is

Two separate mistakes both produce a grab bar that looks correct at a glance but fails BP344:

Measuring From the Floor, Not the Seat

BP344 specifies the grab bar height as an offset above the seat, not a fixed number from the floor. If the water closet seat height is off — say, a standard 380mm bowl was installed instead of the required 450mm accessible unit — a grab bar measured to "750mm from the floor" is now 370mm above the seat instead of 300mm, and fails, even though the bar itself is at the textbook height.

No Blocking Behind the Wall

A grab bar screwed directly into 4-inch or 6-inch CHB, without solid wood or steel blocking behind the tile, will hold a light static load but fails a real pull test. This is invisible on a finished wall — the bar looks identical whether it's anchored into blocking or into hollow block — which is exactly why it's the item inspectors and engineers flag most in retrofit audits.

What's the difference between the L-type and flip-up grab bars?

The L-type bar is fixed to the side wall (horizontal leg ~900mm, vertical leg ~750mm). The flip-up bar sits on the transfer side and folds up out of the way when not in use, letting a wheelchair pull alongside the water closet. BP344 requires both.

What diameter should a grab bar be?

30mm to 40mm (1 3/16 inch to 1 37/64 inch), round cross-section, for any bar requiring a full grip.

Can a grab bar be mounted directly into CHB (hollow block)?

Not on its own. BP344 requires the bar to support at least 200kg, which needs solid blocking (wood or steel) set into the wall behind the finish before tiling — anchoring straight into hollow block will not pass a pull test even if it holds visually.

How high should the lavatory (sink) be?
